ECC Named Military Friendly® School

For the third year in a row, Edgecombe Community College has been recognized nationally as a school that helps military veterans succeed.

The college was recently designated a 2022-2023 Military Friendly® School. ECC received a Silver Award in the Small Community College category.

According to militaryfriendly.com, “Military Friendly® Schools strive towards and succeed in the areas that matter most in helping veterans make the transition from the military to school and, ultimately, satisfying careers in the civilian world. Earning the designation shows that your school meets the minimum criteria.”

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,800 schools participated in the 2022-2023 survey with 665 earning special awards for going above the standard.

“We are honored to be recognized for our efforts to help veterans with a smooth transition from active military to civilian life,” says Samanthia Phillips, vice president of student services.

About 50 ECC students are veterans or active duty military. To recognize veterans, ECC hosts special events, including the Veterans Day Memorial and Recognition Ceremony in November.

Among other targeted services, ECC has designated a VA Veteran Affairs Coordinator within the Student Services Division, installed reserved parking spaces for student vets or active duty military, arranged trips to area Student Veterans Centers and museums/parks. The college also recognizes ECC student veterans at graduation.
