ECC Runs with Tackle the Tar

The Edgecombe Community College Tackle the Tar contingent numbered forty-five, including runners and volunteers.

Forty-five students, faculty, and staff participated on the Edgecombe Community College team at Tackle the Tar held in May.

Tackle the Tar is a 5K obstacle course race and family fun day sponsored by the Rocky Mount Rotary Club.

All proceeds fund scholarships for local students attending Edgecombe and Nash community colleges and NC Wesleyan University. Since 2016, when the first Tackle the Tar was held, Edgecombe Community College has received $105,000 in proceeds from the race.

The race was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic. Organizer Kristen Brabble credits numerous sponsors with continuing their support despite the setback.

ECC President Dr. Greg McLeod and Student Government Association President Chynice Chapman were co-captains of the ECC Tackle the Tar team, which competed in the Local College Heat alongside runners from Nash Community College and Wesleyan.

Tony Rook, dean of students, coordinated the ECC team.

ECC Manufacturing Technology student Bonnie Bulluck of Rocky Mount ran in her first Tackle the Tar. “I was looking for a challenge today,” she said. “I wanted to see what it’s all about.”

Next year’s Tackle the Tar is set for May 20, 2023.
