Safety Highlighted at Seminar Held at ECC
Edgecombe Community College was the site for a Safety Seminar held Monday, Feb. 23 in the Astemo Auditorium. LS Cable employees attended the event, which also included four trainers. Clifford House, ECC’s director of customized training, led an introduction on OSHA standards (Occupational Safety and Health Administration). Participants learned about the proper maintenance and use of hand tools, as well as safety requirements, fall protection and the structural integrity of surfaces. House also focused on Personal Protective Equipment and Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom), meant to advise employees about hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
Other presenters were Kim Barnes who taught fork lift and scissor lift. Krisopher House presented on electrical and lockout/tagout, a safety procedure followed so that equipment can’t start while an individual is maintaining or repairing it. Ivette Mercado provided an overview about safety practices at the Tarboro plant.
The Safety Seminar also featured a Local Industry Safety Panel. Panelists were Charles Gilmore, Sara Lee HR training generalist; Matthew Dempster, Sara Lee health and safety manager; Danisha Lowe, Astemo health, safety and environment administrator; and Mercado, LS Cable Systems environmental health & safety manager.
