ECC Hosts Reception to Honor State SkillsUSA Winners

Edgecombe Community College student Rafael Serrano-Acosta, a dual enrolled SouthWest Edgecombe High School student, explains the payload of the high altitude balloon project to his proud parents. The balloon project was the focus of his team’s entry in Career Pathways Showcase: Industrial and Engineering Technology, which won a gold medal in the state SkillsUSA competition.

Edgecombe Community College recently celebrated students who won awards at the state SkillsUSA competition held in April. College officials hosted a reception on May 4 for the students, their families, and faculty advisors.

Eighteen students and six faculty advisors participated in the SkillsUSA North Carolina State Leadership and Skills Conference, a competition for students to demonstrate their career and technical skills.

Every ECC student who competed brought home an award. The ECC chapter is called SkillsECC.

Three SkillsECC teams and two individuals placed first, winning gold medals in their competitions. One of the individual gold medal awards was in the Hair Coloring contest, and an ECC student won a silver medal in this same category. Two dual enrolled high school students received gold and bronze medals in Welding Sculpture.

ECC President Dr. Greg McLeod said at the reception, “These experiences complement and enhance what takes place in the classroom. We are so very proud of these outstanding students, and we are especially grateful to their faculty advisors for their guidance and to their families for their support.”
