ECC President Celebrates Graduates During Rocky Mount Housing Authority Ceremony

Dr. Greg McLeod, ECC President
Dr. Greg McLeod, ECC President, was the guest speaker for the Rocky Mount Housing Authority’s (RMHA) Self-Sufficiency Completion Ceremony. According to the RMHA website, the graduation recognizes participants who “have succeeded in meeting their goals towards self-sufficiency.”
The graduates completed two programs to assist in building their financial security and becoming economically independent. Through the Family Self-Sufficiency Program, participants establish an escrow savings account. According to the Winter RMHA newsletter, “if a resident’s income increases during the program, the extra rent is placed into their escrow account. The funds are available to the resident when they successfully complete the program.”
Assistance in gaining economic independence and supportive services are offered to public housing residents through the Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency Program.
When speaking to the 20 graduates, McLeod reflected on a time in his life in which he experienced economic challenges and ultimately sought assistance. His journey from there to becoming ECC president was beneficial for him and his family.
“While there may be 20 of you who graduated, the impact and benefit of your decision to be part of this program, the impact and benefit of your commitment to improve your situation, and the impact and benefit of your successful completion goes far beyond just 20 people,” stated McLeod. “You are making a positive difference for your family, for your community, and for future generations that will come after you.”
The graduates’ commitment for improvement extended beyond RMHA. Participants also received industry credentials and course credits from area community colleges after completing courses like notary certification, administrative assistant, basic life support certification and more.
“I don’t know how long or challenging the program was,” acknowledged McLeod. “When there are those who commit themselves to accomplishing a goal such as this and doing it, it is worthy of a celebration.”
