ECC Welcomes New Students

Summer is marching on, and the school year will be upon us before we know it. Fall semester at Edgecombe Community College begins August 17, roughly five weeks from now!

The college is offering numerous opportunities in July for new and prospective students to learn about academic and workforce training programs and the many free services available to help students succeed.

ECC is taking extra steps this summer to reconnect with adult learners who have stopped out of college and assist them in returning to school and completing a workforce credential. In North Carolina, 380,000 residents ages 25-44 have some college but no degree.

“While the percentage of high school students taking advantage of free college classes continues to grow, the average age of our students is 27. Thus, a majority of our students are adult learners, whose barriers to completing their programs are varied and complex,” says ECC President Dr. Greg McLeod.

“Through direct student outreach and special marketing initiatives, the college seeks to help adult learners gain the knowledge, skills, and experience to launch, advance, or change their careers.”

Whether students want to be part of a healthcare team or launch a small business, ECC provides a pathway. Students can complete a two-year degree and transfer to a four-year school, earn a career-focused degree, diploma, or certificate, and/or take advantage of free Small Business Center resources and support.

To help adult learners get started, ECC has planned a “Let’s Reconnect” orientation on Wednesday, July 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Fleming 152 on the Tarboro campus. Guests will learn how to re-engage with the college, and counselors will help participants determine what programs will help meet their goals. Dinner and childcare will be provided.

Other new students are encouraged to attend New Student Orientation on Wednesday, July 26. New students will be able to meet one-on-one with an academic counselor, register for classes, complete the financial aid process, and hear tips on how to succeed in college. New Student Orientation is set for 5 p.m. in the Center for Innovation on the Tarboro campus.

In addition, every Tuesday and Thursday in July, August 1, and August 3, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Academic Success Center will provide one-stop shopping for all things related to attending ECC in the fall. Staff will guide returning, new, and prospective students through the admissions and financial aid applications and will help students select a major and register for classes.

The Student Success Center is located in the library building on the Tarboro campus and in the Barnes Building on the Rocky Mount campus.
