Instructor Named to State MLK Commission
Jacquie Jeffers, an adjunct instructor at Edgecombe Community College, has been appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to serve on the state’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission.
Jacquie Jeffers, adjunct humanities instructor at Edgecombe Community College, has been appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to serve on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission.
She is one of 16 individuals who sit on the statewide commission, which works to encourage appropriate ceremonies and activities throughout North Carolina relating to the observance of the legal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.
The commission also works to promote an awareness and appreciation of the life and work of Dr. King.
Gov. Cooper is the third governor to appoint Jeffers to this group. Governors Pat McCrory and Beverly Purdue also tapped her to sit on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission.
She is assigned to Region 4, which includes Edgecombe, Wilson, Nash, Wayne, Lenoir, Greene, Pitt, Martin, Craven, Jones, Washington, Pamlico, Chowan, Beaufort, Bertie, Hyde, Tyrell, and Dare counties.
Jeffers is active with the Martin Luther King Grant Committee and serves as an emcee at community programs, motivational/graduation speaker, liaison for professional development for teachers to promote diversity and character education among children, and visual aid developer for the statewide Martin Luther King, Jr. reception in Raleigh.
She also was part of the state’s first Martin Luther King, Jr. Content of Character Committee event held last summer in Warrenton.
Jeffers created the “Share the Dream Project,” which provides students with incentives for academic achievement and character development throughout the school year. Last May, she served as a panelist for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest in Roanoke Rapids. She also has served as the education chairman.
She has performed “Share the Dream,” a song she wrote to honor Dr. King, at the Rosa Parks Museum in Alabama, North Carolina’s Liberty Bell Ringing Ceremony, the Progress Energy Center in Raleigh, the Triangle Interfaith MLK Prayer Breakfast in Durham, and in numerous community programs.
Also, for the past eight years, Jeffers has directed the Share the Dream Talent Show to bring unity to the community. Funds raised have been donated to organizations to benefit citizens and the National Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation in Washington, DC.
