Student Support Leader Participates in Statewide Conference
Sherrod Sumner, coordinator of the Academic Success Center at Edgecombe Community College, participated in the recent first Annual Coach Academy in Winston-Salem.
The two-day training, called Improving Student Success Through Proactive Coaching, was sponsored by the NC Community College System Office in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, the Minority Male Success Initiative, the NC Career Coach Program, and the NC Perkins team.
Sumner shared best practices and worked with other coaches to develop strategies to meet the needs of community college students.
The Academic Success Center at ECC provides services to students that include application assistance, assistance with New Student Orientation and registration, student planning, goal setting, access to tutoring and tutorial software, individualized support services, and scholarship application assistance.
“Our goal is to build rapport with students and make sure they receive the support they need, which is the number one indicator of student success,” Sumner says.
