Tarboro Resident Joins ECC Board of Trustees

Tarboro resident June Cherry (left) was recently appointed to the Edgecombe Community College Board of Trustees. Carol White (right), Edgecombe County Clerk of Court, delivered the oath of office to Cherry at a recent board meeting.

June Cherry, a retired health care professional and a native of Tarboro, has been appointed to a four-year term on the Edgecombe Community College Board of Trustees.

Appointed to the ECC board by the Edgecombe County Board of Education, she fills the position formerly held by Dr. Chad Cayton, who served on the board from 2019 until 2021.

Cherry is a graduate of Tarboro-Edgecombe Academy. She earned a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and worked as a dental hygienist in Tarboro for 38½ years before retiring in 2018.

“I look forward to serving on the Edgecombe Community College Board of Trustees,” she said at a recent board meeting. “My husband and I are lifelong members of the community and have always supported Edgecombe Community College. Education is very important to us, and I feel called to be here.”

“Mrs. Cherry will do a tremendous job,” says the Rev. Jerry Spruell, chair of the ECC Board of Trustees. “Health sciences are the college’s flagship programs, and with her extensive experience in healthcare, she will be a great asset to our board and to the college.”

Cherry participated in several international trips organized through the ECC Travel Abroad Program. She is a lifelong member of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church. She and her husband, Lance Cherry, have two children and two granddaughters.

The ECC Board of Trustees has twelve members, each serving a four-year term. The Office of the Governor appoints four members. The Edgecombe County Board of Education and the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners each appoint four members.
