Nurse Aide I Training

Nurse Aide I Training (NUR3240) is designed to prepare graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis on aging including mental, social and physical needs of the elderly, patient’s rights, nutrition management, elimination procedures, safe environment, restorative services, personal and special care procedures and activities, human body structure and function and related common disease/disorders, communication and documentation, death and dying, and roles of the nursing assistant and health team members. The course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences.

Upon satisfactory completion of the course the student will be eligible for the written and skills competency evaluation, (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program, NNAAP). Upon successfully passing the NNAAP, written and skills portions, the student will be listed as a Nurse Aide I by the N.C. Division of Health Service Regulation.

Program Specific Requirements

  • One of the academic admission requirements.
    • Submission of documentation demonstrating one of the following academic requirements:
      • College degree or diploma
      • English 111
      • High School GPA of 2.6 within last 5 years
      • Reading 090, or DRE 098, or ENG 095
    • One of the following placement tests within the last 5 years with acceptable scores:
      • NC DAP 097—place into (Same as Accuplacer)
      • TABE- Reading Score only- 9th grade
      • SAT- 300
      • ASSET- 28
      • ACT- Reading score 22
      • COMPASS-40
      • ENG 011 (NC)
      • ENG 002 (Must be NC; cannot have a P)
    • In the absence of any of the above the student will need to take the TABE assessment at Edgecombe Community College or designated location.
  • Photo ID (government issued; North Carolina, current).
  • Social Security Card or Government issued work visa (signed; cannot be laminated, must be physically intact and legible).
  • Both photo ID and Social Security card must have names that match.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and perform clinical responsibilities.
  • 2-step Tuberculin Skin Test (TST)—current through the end of clinical and negative, or documentation of negative chest x-ray or TB screening from primary care provider or health department.
  • A current COVID-19 vaccine.
  • A background check through the vendor contracted with Edgecombe Community College must be completed by the end of the day on the third day of class or students will be de-enrolled. Students should be aware that the background check required by the clinical agency must be completed by the due date to provide the clinical agency time for review and to determine clinical participation eligibility. Students should prepare and plan for payment of background upon registering for the class. Students who do not complete this requirement will be de-enrolled.
  • Drug screens may be required by clinical agencies—guidelines will be discussed during orientation. Drug screens required by the clinical agency have to be completed by the set due date in order to provide the clinical agency time for review. Students should prepare and plan to payment of the drug screen upon registering for the class. Students who do not complete this requirement will be de-enrolled.
  • Staff will provide the student with the appropriate background instruction sheet upon registration. Drug tests will be discussed during orientation.

Identification needs to be verified and documented by staff that first and last names match exactly, and copies should not be retained by the college.

  • All clinical mornings will start earlier than the start times for theory and lab.
  • Saturday clinical will start earlier than the start times for theory and lab and typically do not end until after lunch.

All Health Occupation students are encouraged to take the CRC/Work Keys Assessment prior to completion of a course.

Tuition & Fees

  • $201.50 (Scholarships may be available)
  • Additional costs for textbook, uniforms, criminal background expenses or drug screens if they are required by the clinical agency.
  • Uniforms will be discussed during orientation to the class.
  • Books are available in the bookstore and are needed on the first day of class.
  • State testing fee is $140 and is due the week before the class ends.
