Facility Maintenance Worker - Curriculum

The Facility Maintenance Worker curriculum is designed to prepare students to maintain and repair physical structures and systems of commercial and industrial establishments such as hotels, hospitals, apartment complexes, and shopping centers.

Students will learn to use hand and power tools; replace defective electrical switches and fixtures; maintain performance of environmental control systems; repair plumbing fixtures, woodwork, plastic, and sheetrock; lay brick; finish small areas of concrete; and paint structures.

Upon completion of this curriculum, the graduate should possess the necessary skills to qualify for employment as a facility maintenance worker.

Facility Maintenance Worker - Program Outcomes

  1. Basic Heating: Students will demonstrate the safe and proper use of tools.
  2. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of gas appliances, parts, operation/repair; and heating systems, heat pumps, and electric heat.
  3. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of electric heat, operations, ability to troubleshoot, and repair.
  4. Carpentry: Students will demonstrate the safe and proper use of tools.
  5. Students will demonstrate proper techniques of forming and framing.
  6. Plumbing Systems: Students will demonstrate knowledge of plumbing tools, materials, fixtures, and safety.
  7. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of drain, waste, and vent piping.
  8. Students will demonstrate their ability to run fresh water piping systems.
  9. Students will demonstrate their ability to repair system problems to include piping, water closets, tubs, sinks, water heaters, drain, waste, and vent piping.
  10. Masonry: Students will demonstrate the safe and proper use of masonry tools.
  11. Students will demonstrate the proper technique for mixing mortar for brick laying, cement blocks laying, and concrete for pads.

Some programs at Edgecombe Community College lead to a license and/or certification in North Carolina. Beginning July 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Education regulations require disclosures for all programs leading to a license or certification. Disclosures will be provided for all states and will indicate whether the program meets licensure requirements, does not meet licensure requirements or has not yet been determined for each state.
