Social and Human Services - Curriculum

The Social and Human Services concentration prepares students to assist in drug and alcohol counseling, prevention-oriented educational activities, rehabilitation with recovering clients, managing community-based programs, counseling in residential facilities, and pursuit of four-year degrees. Course work includes classroom and experiential activities oriented toward an overview of chemical dependency, psychological/sociological process, the twelve Core Functions, intervention techniques with individuals in groups, and follow-up activities with recovering clients. Graduates should qualify for positions as substance abuse counselors, DWI counselors, halfway house workers, residential facility employees, and substance education specialists. With educational and clinical experiences, graduates can obtain certification by the North Carolina Addiction Specialist Professional Practice Board.

Social and Human Services - Program Outcomes

  1. Student will demonstrate an understanding of how different human services have emerged and the various forces that have influenced their development.
  2. Student will demonstrate an understanding of the structure and dynamics of organizations, communities, and society in addition to nature of individuals and groups.
  3. Student will demonstrate an understanding of the scope of human services, including the demand for services and the human conditions that warrant human services intervention.
  4. Student will demonstrate an understanding of the process of assessing a client’s needs and selection of interventions that will assist clients in obtaining optimal functioning and goal obtainment.
  5. Student will demonstrate an understanding of information management skills that include obtaining, analyzing, evaluating, and disseminating information.
  6. Student will demonstrate the ability to create genuine and empathic relationships with others.
  7. Student will demonstrate an understanding of core client-related values and attitudes.
  8. Student will demonstrate an understanding of his or her values, cultural bias, philosophies, and personality style and how their personal characteristics impact clients.
